Indira Gandhi Co-operative Hospital, Kadavanthra, has achieved a significant milestone in cardiac care by successfully completing 200 cardiothoracic surgeries within a short span of just fifteen months. What sets this achievement apart is not just the number—but the hospital’s unwavering commitment to affordability and access, as a majority of these life-saving procedures were performed at highly subsidized rates for economically disadvantaged patients. The hospital's Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) unit, established a year ago, is led by renowned Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. George J. Valooran and Cardiac Anesthetist Dr. Geo Paul. Their expertise, supported by a dedicated team and a fully equipped operation theatre and intensive care unit, has made advanced cardiac surgery accessible to those who would otherwise be unable to afford it. Significantly, 50% of the surgeries were performed under the Karunya Arogya Suraksha Padhathi (KASP), Kerala’s state-run health insurance scheme, ensuring financial protection and timely intervention for those most in need. The surgeries included a range of complex procedures such as bypass surgeries, valve replacements, and emergency interventions—all performed with high success rates and compassionate care. “This milestone reflects our mission to provide world-class healthcare without discrimination. It’s not just about numbers; it’s about lives saved and hope restored,” said Shri Ajay Tharayil, Secretary of the hospital. This landmark achievement highlights Indira Gandhi Co-operative Hospital’s growing reputation as a people-centric, technologically advanced, and socially committed healthcare institution. With plans for further expansion in cardiac care and other specialties, the hospital continues to stand by its founding principle—"Healthcare to all, irrespective of wealth."
